Session Abstract: As AI tools become indispensable in Institutional Research, the difference between actionable insights and misleading outputs often hinges on one critical skill: prompt engineering. This session equips IR professionals with strategies to craft effective prompts that produce accurate, compliant, and replicable results. Using the CLEAR framework (Context, Language, Examples, Actions, Refinement), participants will explore common prompt failures, learn safeguards for data privacy, and apply governance practices that ensure trustworthy AI use. Attendees will practice rewriting prompts in real IR scenarios, accreditation narratives, compliance reporting, survey analysis and student success metrics. The session emphasizes hands-on learning, with ready-to-use templates and a personalized toolkit for daily tasks. By session’s end, participants will confidently design prompts that reduce bias, and strengthen institutional capacity to deliver reliable, AI-driven insights for decision-making.
