Session Abstract: Sponsored research is an integral part of higher education. As the landscape of sponsored research changes, particularly impacted by changes from federal sponsors, we are reevaluating how we measure research productivity as well as integrating success metrics into strategic initiatives. This presentation reviews sponsored research and metric development at the University of North Carolina System Office, a system of 16 public universities in NC that enrolls over 250k students. The UNC System has more than $2.2 billion in research expenditures and campuses that serve every region of North Carolina from small, baccalaureate institutions to large, R1 institutions. One of the challenges was developing decision criteria that would be equitable across the system while ensuring that individual university missions were incorporated. An evaluation of the existing and proposed metrics and related policies will be presented.
