Session Abstract: ". . . you won’t believe number 99.31(a)(1)!" One of the most frequently encountered obstacles to institutional data collection and use is limited understanding of allowable data sharing under FERPA. This session reviews the 18 different authorities that FERPA provides for sharing data, focusing on those most useful for collecting internal data for use by institutional researchers. Armed with the ability to cite the appropriate FERPA regulations chapter-and-verse, institutional researchers will be better able to collect—and protect—student data while respecting student privacy. Bonus content: two HEA-approved responses to "I can't disclose FAFSA data"!
