Session Abstract: We examined the institutional characteristics of colleges and universities that influence bachelor’s degree completion rates among non-first-time, full-time students (i.e., transfer-in students). Using the 2015–2016 IPEDS Outcome Measures, we analyzed 4, 6, and 8 years graduation rates for transfer-in students across 1,981 four-year institutions. We grouped locale values into four categories (City, Suburb, Town, Rural). Results show that transfer-in students at private nonprofit institutions graduate at rates higher than those at public colleges. Transfer-in proportion was negatively associated with completion rates at all time points. Rural institutions and colleges demonstrated lower graduation rates than city-based colleges. Additionally, compared to Far West, institutions in the Southeast and Southwest also exhibited lower graduation rates. Our findings highlight the critical role institutional structures play in shaping transfer student outcomes.
